Reliable safe boating is directly relative to a good ongoing “preventative”
maintenance and maintenance program. A small expense towards maintenance will
prevent large expenses for repairs in the future.
In “preventative” maintenance we target specific areas and items to check and
make sure they are functioning and operating properly. This should be done on a
weekly or monthly basis and also depends on how often you use your boat.
Examples of what should be checked with a good “preventative” maintenance
program:
-
Battery (cables, electrolyte)
-
Engine (oil, transmission fluid, cooling
water, belts, hoses)
-
Generator (same as engine with the exception of
transmission)
-
Sea Strainers (engines, generator, air-conditioners)
-
Shaft
packing boxes
-
Rudder packing boxes
-
Thru hull vales in engine room (exercise,
check for leaks)
-
Operation of automatic bilge pumps
-
Operation of navigational
lights
-
Operation of anchor winch
-
Helm accessories for proper operation
-
Start
each engine including generator check for proper flow of cooling water
-
Operated
transmission & momentarily engage forward and reverse.
Maintenance performed on your boat is more than just keeping the decks clean
and the chrome polished. There are many items that the manufacturer of your boat
recommends be checked and serviced on a scheduled basis such as engine oil &
filter replacement, fuel filter, engine anodes (zincs), gas engine timing, heat
exchanger core blockage, trim tab pump fluid, hydraulic steering fluid etc.
If your in the position of having to do repairs because of deferred or
neglected maintenance, or have had an unforeseen event cause damage to your
boat, in most cases we can help with those problems also. We’ll even clean the
decks and keep the chrome polished!
With the exception of below the water line when in the water, all maintenance
and repairs are accomplished with the convenience of where your boat is located.
If maintenance or repairs require your boat to be hauled, we can make
arrangements at a local boat yard and perform work there when permitted.
We can modify these examples and create a preventative maintenance plan to fit
your specific needs. A checklist with comments of work performed will be made
and kept with the “ship's maintenance log” for a permanent
record.
The combination of “preventative” maintenance and maintenance will help prevent
unforeseen breakdowns, keep your boat looking great and give you peace of mind
knowing that your boat is operating safely and reliably.
