Why Boater to Boater?
Because when you contact us, regardless of what it is --
minor maintenance, serious repairs or a simple consultation
about upgrading your boat that turns into sea stories at
“happy hour” on the aft deck -- it's just one boater to
another.
I have been around boats and
boat yards from as far back as I can remember… let's just
say “A long time”. I remember as a kid my dad and uncle
built a kit boat for water-skiing. The thing was barely 13’
long. That was enough boat to get my dad hooked on boating.
When I was 6 years old my dad pulled up in front of the
house with this hulk of a mess plywood boat that was the
size of the Queen Marry… it was really only 20’ but you have
to remember, I was 6. My dad completely rebuilt her; engine,
interior and exterior. This was when I was introduced to
sandpaper and paint. Over the years his boats continued to
get bigger and for me paint brushes turned into hand tools
and hand tools to power tools and slowly I was attaining the
skills of the fine craftsman and ship-wright my dad was.
With the complete rebuild of
her wooden hull and engines the 1950 30’ Stephens Cruiser
“My JoAnn” took the place of the 20-footer. Next was a 1934
William Hand 50’ motor sail yacht “The Queen” built at
Wheeler Ship yards in New York. This boat had sunk off
Pillar Point harbor and was re-floated. When I was 16, my
dad purchased her and dry-docked her at Anchor Marine boat
yard. She was launched 8 years later after complete redesign
of the interior layout and rebuild of her hull including:
re-planking, rib sistering, framing. Engine rework,
installation of new generator, fuel tanks, electrical
systems, electronics, plumbing, masts & rigging was also
accomplished.
Years of working in that boat
yard, hanging out with numerous craftsmen of the trade watching
and learning about the different work that went on all the boats that came in and out of the yard, was decades of experience in one place
that was shared with me.
Later on came the tuna boat
business venture. An 87’ Masters Steel shrimp
boat later converted to long-liner purchased in Louisiana by
my dad myself and a partner. I had to have my own pride of
ownership, so came the 19’ Reinell that turned into the 34’
Silverton convertible “North Star” that turned into the 46’
Silverton Aft Cabin “Nuttintuit”.
My dad decided it was time for a change and after
25 years sold “The Queen” and
went for a 1989 50’ Veneti Express cruiser “Reflections”.
As you can see “Boater to
Boater” has numerous years of experience to share with you.
